Meet the Management – Laura Schlieker – Director Biostatistics

Since our team grew substantially, we searched, appointed, and enabled a bigger management team at Staburo, consisting of two heads (of departments) and six directors (focus on data science topics). We want to give them a chance to talk about themselves and their passion! Therefore, we will publish a mini news series about the management team members, here. Last month we started with our head of quality assurance, Luciana Husfeld and will continue with our director biostatistics, Laura Schlieker.

Who are you?

I am Laura Schlieker, director biostatistics with focus on biomarkers. I joined Staburo 5 years ago and I am looking forward to the next years. I am statistician by training and received my bachelor’s and master’s degree in Statistics with focus on biometry from Technische Universtität Dortmund, several years ago.

Please tell us something about your area of work.

My area of expertise are predictive and prognostic biomarkers, mainly in oncology, as well as biomarkers in diagnostics. I am passionate about multivariate statistics and machine learning! I love doing statistics, but also to work hands on with data and to program in R! One of my strengths is the capability to handle several projects at the same time, but still being able to keep track.

What are your goals for your role?

I am striving to build up a group of experts in the field of biomarker research and precision medicine. My aim is to create an inspiring and friendly work environment where everyone has the chance to grow and use their strengths!

Isar team barbecue

Isar team barbecue

Staburo team event @ Isar

We were very happy to get together last week for the first outside team event of the year, with 30 Staburo colleagues!

A big part of our work was, also in 2022, still performed from home. Therefore, we were really looking forward to having a picnic together. The weather was perfect – over 30°C for the first time this year – yet another confirmation of the cliché that Munich is the northernmost Italian city. Some even went for a dip in the ice-cold Isar river.

The food with various tartes and salads was delicious as always and the atmosphere was great – even some new trend drinks were born! We are looking forward to the next team events!

New Staburo logo

New Staburo logo

Staburo has a new logo

We think it is the perfect time to update our company logo. In recent years, we expanded our services from biostatistical consulting to more broader data science in healthcare. This takes into account major growth in data analysis projects, plus additional services in data transparency and bioinformatics, which are all in our eyes much better represented under the data science umbrella. Of course, we still remain strong in biostatistics and statistical programming. Furthermore, we will change our brand colors, we hope you like it!

Staburo @ DAGStat 2022

Staburo @ DAGStat 2022

Staburo @ DAGStat 2022 in Hamburg

Staburo statisticians joined the DAGStat conference 2022 in Hamburg, March 28 to April 1, hosted at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. One goal of the joint statistical meeting of the German Consortium for Statistics (Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft Statistik, DAGStat) is to stimulate constructive discussions between the representatives of the various statistical areas summarized by the DAGStat theme >>Statistics under one umbrella<< (an umbrella being a conference present in Hamburg 😉). This year, the central DAGStat theme was complemented by the motto >>Mind the gap – Interplay between theory and practice<<. In this sense the Staburo statisticians updated themselves about current research topics which could be applied to biostatistical questions in their daily work. Research areas of interest included: Design of experiments and clinical trials, clustering and classification, statistics in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry, survival and event history analysis, the STRATOS (STRengthening Analytical Thinking for Observational Studies) initiative, causal inference, robustness of statistical conclusions, and cross-validation. As a lesson learned from SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and climate change, with extreme weather events, the role and importance of statistics and data science to science and society, and the need to prepare for future challenges was intensely discussed.
