Staburo presents two posters @ PSI conference in Gothenburg

Two posters by Staburo members were presented at the PSI 2022 conference in Gothenburg, Sweden. The conference, regarded as the principal annual event of the statisticians in the pharmaceutical industry, took place as face-to-face event from 12th to 15th of June in the Gothia Towers.

High quality talks and poster presentations were accompanied by great social events and many opportunities to connect with colleagues.

The first poster was about a simulation study comparing different variance estimators and stratum weights in a Z-test for Kaplan-Meier rates at a fixed time. It was presented by Stephan Bischofberger, Biostatistician/Statistical Programmer, and it was based on joint work by Hannes Buchner, Gabriele Bleckert and Ling Zhu, as well as Rainer-Georg Göldner from Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma GmbH & Co. KG and Bernhard Haller from TUM. This poster also won a poster award at the conference!

The second poster was a collaboration by Laura Schlieker, Director Biostatistics at Staburo GmbH, and Anke Schulz, Principal Statistician at Bayer AG, comparing different cut off determination methods based on real study data from a phase III oncology trial, as well as using simulated data. Laura had the opportunity to present the poster to the audience in a 1-min poster pitch!

The conference Gala Dinner on the waterside in Gothenburg provided delicious food and great entertainment by an Abba tribute band and a DJ, made all PSI conference attendees celebrate until the early morning.

The TUM career day panel with the topic leadership was supported by Josef Höfler and other panelists (i.e., Susanne Keller from Baxter, Niklas Grünbauer from TenneT TSO, Bernd Kohler from Takeda and Herbert Reiter from financial.com)

During a panel discussion students had the opportunity to ask questions, e.g.:

  • How do I get a position as team leader?
  • How can I prepare for this position?
  • What kind of skills do I need?
  • What difficult situations came up and how did you handle them?

Josef Höfler shared his experience with the students from his perspective as entrepreneur.  Staburo started as small team and now has grown to over 55 employees. Especially in a constantly changing environment it is important to take over responsibilities. Creating an environment based on trust, clear communication, appreciation, and common goals is key for a successful company growth.

Meet the Management – Laura Schlieker – Director Biostatistics

Since our team grew substantially, we searched, appointed, and enabled a bigger management team at Staburo, consisting of two heads (of departments) and six directors (focus on data science topics). We want to give them a chance to talk about themselves and their passion! Therefore, we will publish a mini news series about the management team members, here. Last month we started with our head of quality assurance, Luciana Husfeld and will continue with our director biostatistics, Laura Schlieker.

Who are you?

I am Laura Schlieker, director biostatistics with focus on biomarkers. I joined Staburo 5 years ago and I am looking forward to the next years. I am statistician by training and received my bachelor’s and master’s degree in Statistics with focus on biometry from Technische Universtität Dortmund, several years ago.

Please tell us something about your area of work.

My area of expertise are predictive and prognostic biomarkers, mainly in oncology, as well as biomarkers in diagnostics. I am passionate about multivariate statistics and machine learning! I love doing statistics, but also to work hands on with data and to program in R! One of my strengths is the capability to handle several projects at the same time, but still being able to keep track.

What are your goals for your role?

I am striving to build up a group of experts in the field of biomarker research and precision medicine. My aim is to create an inspiring and friendly work environment where everyone has the chance to grow and use their strengths!
